The Swadeshi movement started due to the partition of Bengal.
Viceroy Curzon divided Bengal in 1905. Bengal, which comprised parts of Bihar and Orissa, was the largest province of British India at the time. Bengal was to be divided, the British claimed, for administrative reasons. However, Bengal's division enraged people across India. It was opposed by all factions of Congress, including the moderates and radicals. Consequently, they organised large public meetings and planned protests and innovative strategies for widespread disagreement. The Swadeshi movement was the name given to the conflict that developed. This movement promoted self-help, swadeshi enterprise, national education, and the use of Indian languages while opposing British control.
