One-third of all seats are reserved for women in local-level bodies in India. India has a three-tier system of government- at the centre, in the state and the districts (Municipalities) and in the villages (Panchayati Raj Bodies). The local level government scenario changed after an amendment made in 1992 in the Constitution of India, according to which one-third of the seats were reserved for women in all local bodies. This makes 33.33 per cent of all the seats, and it resulted in the step toward increasing women’s participation in politics and governance.
