Detailed Solution

Scattering of light causes the blue colour of the sky and the reddening of the sun at sunrise and sunset.
We have seen that the clear cloudless daytime sky is blue. This is because light with a shorter wavelength gets scattered more. That is, the molecules in the air scatter the blue light(shortest wavelength) more than the red light(highest wavelength). So, the sky appears bluish. But, during sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere(because they are very close to the horizon). Therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away. So, most of the red light, which is the least scattered, enters our eyes. Hence, the sun and the sky appear red.
