Detailed Solution

Bhopal Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes of its time, was built in the 11th century. According to legend, the Paramara Raja Bhoj constructed Bhopal Lake or 'Bhojtal' while he was the ruler of Malwa (1005–1055). Bhopal city has expanded around the lake since it was built there in the eleventh century. The people have a strong cultural and religious connection to the lake. The lake provides for their water needs; they grow water chestnut and lotus in it and wash their clothes there (which is highly destructive for the lake ecosystem). Since antiquity, archaeological and historical evidence shows that people have built complex hydraulic structures like dams made of stone debris, reservoirs or lakes, embankments, and irrigation canals.
