Bolsheviks organized the October Revolution. Lenin persuaded the Bolshevik Party and the Petrograd Soviet to approve a socialist takeover of power on October 16, 1917. On October 24, the revolt started. Prime Minister Kerensky had left the city to send for reinforcements after sensing unrest. Two Bolshevik publications' offices were taken control of at dawn by government-aligned armed personnel. The Military Revolutionary Committee ordered its followers to occupy government buildings and detain ministers. The ship Aurora attacked the Winter Palace late in the day. Along the Neva River, other ships sailed and occupied other military outposts. By dusk, the ministers gave up while the committee took control of the city.
