Dr. B.R. Ambedkar played an important role in uplifting the Dalits or the depressed classes. He believed that only political empowerment could alleviate the worries of the downtrodden class. Ambedkar's contribution to the advancement of the Dalits was the founding of the Depressed Classes Association in 1930, which he did to aid the Dalits. He demanded that Dalits have their electorates and that their positions be set aside for them in educational institutions. He agreed to the Poona Pact, which guaranteed seats in provincial and national legislative bodies for the depressed classes.
