Jawaharlal Nehru led the Lahore session of 1929, which is particularly significant since it is during this meeting that the INC announced its intention to pursue "Purna Swaraj," or total independence. Purna Swaraj Diwas was observed on January 26, 1930. On December 19, 1929, the Indian National Congress enacted the illustrious "Purna Swaraj" resolution. On January 26, 1930, a formal proclamation was published, which the Congress Party urged Indians to observe as "Independence Day". Due to the failure of negotiations regarding India's dominion status between independence movement leaders and the British, the statement was passed.
