Machines were designed to produce uniforms which were standardised products for the mass market. But in the market, the demand was high for the goods with intricate designs and specific shapes. For example, in the mid-nineteenth century, Britain produced 500 varieties of hammers and 45 kinds of axes, for which human skills were required and not mechanical technology. Machine-made goods were for export to the colonies, on the other hand, things produced by hand were better finished, individually produced, and carefully designed.
