The term "liberal" refers to someone who, politically, thinks that a government should foster social and political development. The ideal liberal is open to all viewpoints. They thought society could be changed. They believed that all religions were equal because they believed that European states would discriminate against one religion during that time. They did not support kings having unchecked power. They supported an elected, representative parliamentary system of government. A well-trained, impartial judiciary should have the authority to interpret the laws of such a government. Some liberal concepts weren't democratic, though. They opposed the idea of a general right to vote for adults and demanded that only males who owned property be allowed to vote. They opposed women's voting rights.
