Manual scavenging refers to the act of cleaning human excreta manually. Manual scavenging is a practice where Dalit women have to remove human wastes using brooms and baskets from dry latrines and carry that filth on their heads to the disposal grounds. A manual scavenger is a person who does this odd job and that too, on meagre wages. They have to face serious health issues like eye, skin, respiratory, etc. The manual scavengers were considered untouchables in our society and met a lot of exploitation and discrimination. Some records show that around one lakh Dalit women continue to work as manual scavengers in public and private dry latrines. Many protests were organised by organisations like Safai Karamchari Andolan, which filed a PIL in 2003 to bring it to the notice of the Supreme Court that manual scavenging is still practised in some states and demanded the abolition of dry latrines to combat the ill-doings done by low-caste people.
