Detailed Solution

Atmospheric refraction is the phenomenon due to which the stars seem higher in the sky than they actually are.
"The bending of light that occurs when it passes through the atmosphere is called atmospheric refraction." Light from a star reaches the earth's atmosphere, and then the light bends or refracts. Air at higher levels of the atmosphere is rarer and denser at lower levels. Hence, the light bends more in the denser medium. Due to the refraction, the star appears to be at a higher position.
