In the past, this had been the leaders' and thinkers' primary focus. Gandhiji, for instance, used the phrase "There is enough for everybody's need and not for anyone's greed" to express his concern about resource conservation. He attributed the main causes of resource depletion on a worldwide scale to selfish and avaricious people as well as predatory contemporary technology. He favoured production by the masses as a replacement for mass production, which he opposed.
