Jute is also known as "golden thread," and India is the world leader in the jute industry. In Rishra, a small hamlet near Kolkata, the first Jute Industry facility was constructed in 1859. West Bengal is the leader in India's jute industry. Rishra, Bali, Agapara, Titagarh, and Bansberia are just a few of the famous jute-producing centres. Seth Hukumchand was a pioneer in the "Swadeshi Industry," establishing cotton mills (Hukam Chand Mill and Raj Kumar Mill in Indore) as well as a massive jute mill and iron mill in Calcutta, making him the first Indian entrepreneur to create a Jute Mill.
