  • The kidneys are situated on either side of the spine, directly below the rib cage. To allow room for the liver, the right kidney is often slightly lower than the left kidney.
  • Each kidney is around 11.25 cm long, 5 to 7.5 cm wide, and little more than 2.5 cm thick.
  • The left is a little bit thinner and longer than the right. The right kidney is slightly lower than the left kidney because the liver is present on the right side, anterior to the kidney.
