[[1]] soil develops under tropical and sub tropical climates. It is found in the eastern and southern parts of the Deccan Plateau.

Tropical and subtropical climates with alternating wet and dry seasons are favorable for the development of laterite soil. Heavy rainfall results in the leaching of silica and lime while leaving behind iron oxide and aluminium compounds. On the sides of hills, there is laterite soil. It is frequently cut into bricks and used in the construction of houses. The word "Laterite" is derived from the Latin word for bricks, "later."
