Detailed Solution

The black soil, or black cotton soil, is also known as regur soil. The plateau region of India, extending in a triangular shape from south of river Narmada to Kanyakumari, is rich in the black soil of volcanic origin. The Deccan plateau covers the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. The water retention properties of the soil make them suitable for the cultivation of crops like cotton. The soil is rich in minerals and has a fine texture. Since it is the solidified form of lava, black soil is also known as lava soil.
