Detailed Solution

Lord Wellesley started the system of the subsidiary alliance.
Lord Wellesley started the subsidiary alliance system in 1798 C.E. He aimed to expand the British Empire in India. So they had to remove the native rulers and nawabs or make them powerless. However, he made many rulers come under British control through the subsidiary alliance system. But the native rulers had to accept some terms, like the ruler had to abide by the power of the Company. Without the permission of the Company, they were not allowed to fight a war and sign any treaty. The battalion of the English army would be stationed in the state, and they had to pay expenses for the troops to the Company. One English resident would be present at their court.
