Detailed Solution

Meghalaya has become a major coal producer in the country. All production is unevaluated coal mined from numerous small mines operated primarily by local tribes in the unorganised private sector. Coal is produced in the Mikir Hills, Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Garo Hills. Refined coal production was reported from privately owned, unowned mines in unorganised areas. Sectors in these areas except the Mikir Hills area. Local tribes mainly run the mines on private land. Therefore, the number of coal mines in the state is not available. An estimated  560 million tonnes of coal resources in Meghalaya are located at the southern tip of the 400 km Shillong Plateau. These deposits are divided into 20 large and small reserves. Coal is mined using a primitive underground mining method locally known as "rathole mining".
