Wootz steel was produced all over South India during the late 18th century in smelting furnaces by the local people.
Wootz is a special type of carbon steel and is the same which has been used to prepare the sword of the great South Indian ruler, Tipu Sultan. The sword made was special because it had a very sharp edge, and its hardness was unmatched at the time. Wootz steel had a flowing pattern with small carbon crystals embedded in the iron. The furnaces were made of clay and sun-dried bricks.
