In 1861 Viсtоr Emmаnuel II wаs рrосlаimed king оf united Itаly. Over the course of its long history, Italy experienced political division. Throughout the middle of the 19th century, it was split into seven states. Only one of the seven states was controlled by an Italian noble house which was Sardinia-Piedmont. After the failure of the revolutionary uprisings in 1831 and 1848, it was up to the ruler King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia-Piedmont, to unite Italy through war. In 1859, Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrian armies when Chief Minister Cavour formed a diplomatic alliance with the French. Finally, after the unification of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II was enthroned to the crown of Italy.
