Pulakesin-I ruled from AD 535-66 from the hill fort of Vatapi, the capital of the Chalukyan dynasty. Pulakesin I was the founder of this dynasty. They were subordinates to Rashtrakutas. The earliest dynasty was known as the "Badami Chalukyas", which ruled from Vatapi. The rule of the Chalukyas marks an important milestone in the history of South India and a golden age in the history of Karnataka. The political atmosphere in South India shifted from smaller kingdoms to large empires with the ascendancy of Badami Chalukyas.
