Detailed Solution

Nelson Mandela was a nationalist leader of South Africa. He was one of the leading personalities in the struggle of South Africa against Apartheid (Apartheid is a system of brutal laws where people are discriminated against based on their race). People were not allowed to protest against the brutal regime of the racist white government. And due to this law, Nelson Mandela and seven other persons were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964. Later, Nelson Mandela was released from prison (Robben Island) when the struggle against the regime peaked, and people demanded their rights and freedom from the white rulers. He was also elected as the first President of independent South Africa.
