Soma was a plant from which a special drink was prepared.
The ninth Mandala of the Rigveda comprises 114 hymns; the Aryans dedicate this whole mandala to the deity Soma. The only alcoholic beverage consumed throughout the Vedic era appears to have been the fermented juice of the Soma plant. Ancient Aryans were so dependent on this beverage that it quickly became revered as a deity in Iran and India. As a result, one entire Mandala, or Book, of the Rig-Veda is devoted to this deity. Soma, along with Agni and Indra, formed three of the most important Gods of the early Vedic period and had verses in praise of them.
