Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882) was a well-known freedom fighter of Italy who marched into South Italy in 1860. He managed to get a lot of volunteers apart from the regular troops. He and his troops marched into South Italy, the kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and they successfully made the local peasants drive out the Spanish rulers. Giuseppe Garibaldi supported the efforts that Victor Emmanuel II put into the unification of Italy. Victor Emmanuel II succeeded in his plan, and due to his constant efforts, he finally became the king of united Italy in 1861.
