Young Bengal was also known as the Derozians. Derozio's full name was Henry Louis Derozio. On April 8, 1809, he was born in Kolkata. He was a poet from India who was the headmaster of the Hindu College in Kolkata. He worked to improve Bengali education. He was the first Indian to teach science and Western education to Indian students. The Young Bengal, a group of Bengali free thinkers, was formed at Hindu College in Calcutta. They were frequently referred to as Derozians after their fiery lecturer at Hindu College, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio. Young Bengal, a free merchant state that followed classical economics, was influenced by Jeremy Bentham, Adam Smith, and David Ricardo. They intended to propagate radical views through debates and discussions on literature, history, philosophy, and science. Derozian's theories profoundly impacted the early nineteenth-century Bengal social movement known as the Bengal Renaissance. This movement was vocal and reasonable, yet it failed to gain traction.
