Tipu Sultan was among the first Indians inspired by the French Revolution.
Tipu, the Sultan of Mysore, was a member of the Jacobin club. He supported the formation of the Jacobin Clubs of Mysore in 1794, India's first Revolutionary Republican Organisation. Moreover, Tipu Sultan planted a Liberty tree in Srirangapatna, his capital. The French used to call him Citizen Tipu. He was also supported by France when he was facing a war against the British.
