Detailed Solution

‘Salt march’ was an effective symbol of resistance against colonialism. Gandhiji believed that salt, a mere commodity used by every section of society, was capable of uniting the nation for the struggle for independence. Gandhiji, in his letter to the ruler Irwin, wrote some demands against the background and which were general. Of all the other demands for the abolition of the tax was the most important because salt manufacturing was only limited to the colonial government. He saw this abolition of the salt tax as a perfect opportunity to unite the nation in unity for a mass struggle. This abolition of tax was demanded because the colonial had a monopoly over it which increased the price of the daily used commodity and made it difficult for the poor to purchase salt.
