Bahadur Shah Zafar was declared a leader in Delhi during the revolt of 1857.
The sepoy mutiny marched towards Delhi at midnight on May 10, 1857. They rebelled against the government and rejected their sovereignty. They wanted to rejuvenate the older order. They met Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar in Delhi and proclaimed him their leader. The British officers were killed, and the rebels seized the arms and ammunition. The British couldn’t suppress the rebellion, and Delhi was brought under control in just four days. Later, Bahadur Shah Zafar wrote letters to all rulers across the country to join hands, form a confederacy, and lead the rebellion against the British colonial power.
