Detailed Solution

The Maasai society was divided into two social categories. One was the elder, the other a warrior. The elders made up the ruling group of Maasai, who met in councils periodically to deliberate on the affairs of their community and settle disputes. But the introduction of various measures by the British to administer and control the community disturbed the social order. The British appointed chiefs of different sub-groups of Maasai and made them responsible for the tribe.
Additionally, cattle raiding and warfare, which were an essential part of their culture, were banned. The government-appointed chiefs gathered wealth over time, making them immune to the effects of war and drought. But others suffered. Hence, the authority of the elderly diminished.
