Prarthana Samaj was established in 1867 in Bombay. It aimed to reverse the bar on widow remarriage, eliminate child marriage, remove caste-based restrictions, and boost women's education. It was formed in 1867 in Bombay. Atmaram Panduranga founded the movement, gaining momentum and popularity after reformer and scholar Mahadev Govind Ranade joined it.
The Samaj differed from the Bengali Brahmo Samaj in that it was less extremist and cautiously approached reformist programmes. As a result, it received better comments from the general public. Along with Ranade, prominent Samaj members were Sanskrit scholar Sir Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar and political figure Sir Narayan Chandavarkar.
