Italian miller Menocchio started reading the books available in his area in the sixteenth century. But he developed a vision of God and Creation and reinterpreted the Bible's message in a way that infuriated the Roman Catholic Church. As a result, the Roman Church imposed strict regulations on publishers and booksellers and started to keep an Index of Prohibited Books in 1558. Thus Menocchio was hauled twice and put to death when the Roman Church launched its inquisition to stifle heretical beliefs.
