Dietrich Brandis was India's first Inspector General of Forests from Germany. For the construction of their railroads and ships, the British needed trees. The British were worried that residents using the woods and traders recklessly felling trees would destroy the woods. So, they decided to appoint Dietrich Brandis, a German expert, as India's first Inspector General of Forests. Brandis made a proper system that needed to be put in place to manage the forests and that people needed to be taught the science of conservation.
