Detailed Solution

The government introduced the Ganga Action Plan to clean the Ganges.
The Ganges is an important river in India, draining the fertile plains of India. Over the years, the river has become polluted to the extent that several stretches of the river turned into dead zones with very less dissolved oxygen. The Ganga Action Plan (GAP) was initiated in 1985 to clean the polluted holy river. Open defecation, pollution due to excess fertilisers, and industrial wastes contributed to polluting the river. Ganga was declared a national river, and efforts to improve the water quality of the river and conserve its biodiversity were made. The plan also had the proper treatment of industrial wastes before they get dumped into the river as its objective.
