Printing was invented around the sixth century in China. It came to Europe, along with Marco Polo, in 1295.
China, Japan, and Korea invented the earliest print technologies. This system of hand printing was used. Books were printed in China starting in the sixth century AD 594 by rubbing paper, which was also created against the inked surface of woodblocks. The traditional Chinese "accordion book" was folded and stitched at the side because it was impossible to print on both sides of the thin, porous page. For a very long period, the imperial state of China was the main manufacturer of printed matter. Merchant Marco Polo spent 20 years travelling throughout Asia before returning to Venice with abundant goods to trade and knowledge to impart, including the printing press and techniques used in East Asia.
