Shivaji was Marathas' greatest ruler and leader during the 17th century. In response to resistance to Mughal control, Shivaji established his kingdom. Shivaji chooses strong warrior families like the Deshmukhs to establish a solid reign. The Maratha army's core was made of bands of devoted and mobile peasant pastoralists. Shivaji confronted the Mughals in their domains. He created a vast and powerful empire because of a new kind of warfare known as guerrilla warfare that Shivaji pioneered. The Peshwas used the same strategy that Shivaji used to battle the Mughal Empire even after he had passed away.
