Detailed Solution

Jauhar was not a social evil practice in the 19th century among the Rajputs.
When facing defeat at the hands of an enemy, Rajput queens and royal females would self-immolate or burn themselves. According to locals, there were three jauhars in Chittorgarh: one in 1567 when Akbar attacked Chittor (the royal family managed to flee via a covert passageway, and Phool Kanwar led the Jauhar); one in 1535 when Bahadur Shah of Gujarat attacked the fort, during which Rani Karnavati committed Jauhar alongside other women. Alauddin Khilji, the powerful ruler of the Khilji dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, would have won the battle. Still, it would have been a hollow victory because no royal women would be left for him and his army to enslave. Padmavati's self-immolation was a drastic measure driven by the strong sense of honour Rajputs held for their elders.
