The Bastille was one of the largest jails in France.
The attack on Bastille took place on July 14, 1789. The French King had authorised troop entry into the city. Rumours circulated that he was getting ready to tell the soldiers to open fire on the civilians. Thus approximately 7,000 men and women assembled before the town hall to establish a people's militia. They broke into many government buildings looking for weapons. The Bastille, a fortress jail where they hoped to locate ammunition that had been hidden, was attacked by a party of several hundred individuals. Thus the commander of the Bastille was slain in the ensuing armed struggle, and the seven inmates held captive were also freed.
