Detailed Solution

Awadh was one of the last territories to be annexed.
The Subsidiary Alliance was essentially a pact between the British East India Company and the princely states of India, through which the English gained control over the Indian kingdoms. Lord Wellesley, who served as the Governor-General of India from 1798 to 1805, drafted it. Marquis Dupleix, the French Governor-General, used it for the first time. The Nizam of Hyderabad, however, was the first to agree to a carefully crafted subsidiary alliance. Mysore and the British formed a secondary partnership in 1799. Finally, Wellesley forced the Nawab of Awadh to accept the Policy of Subsidiary Alliance in 1801. Peshwa Baji Rao II also subjected his realm to a similar rule in 1802.
