Detailed Solution

Wootz was produced by mixing iron with charcoal and putting it inside small clay pots. It is an anglicized version of local names. In India, the iron was produced locally by the specialized communities of iron smelters. These smelters used the local iron ore to produce iron and steel. In South India, a special type of steel was produced which was known by different names like Ukku in Kannada, Hukku in Telugu, Urukku in Telugu and Malayalam. It was mainly used in making swords and armor. The mighty sword of Tipu Sultan was made up of wootz steel.
