Mangal Pandey was sentenced to death at Barrackpore.
The event at Barrackpore is regarded as the initiation of the revolt of 1857. In Barrackpore cantonment, the regiment of sepoys attacked the higher officials. Mangal Pandey was hanged for attacking officers on April 8, 1857. The sepoys were enraged by the event. Later the sepoys complained about the greased cartridges. They heard that the cartridges were greased with cow and pig fat which was against the religious sentiments of the Hindu and Muslim sepoys. So they refused to use cartridges. They rose in rebellion against the colonial government and led a procession from Meerut to Delhi on May 10 1857.
