Detailed Solution

Ajmer was the capital of the Chauhan kings in the twelfth century.
In mediaeval times, apart from temple towns such as Thanjavur, Kanchipuram, Madurai, and Tirupati, pilgrimage centres such as Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh and Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu slowly transformed into townships. Before Ajmer became the suba headquarters under the Mughals, it was the capital of the Chauhan kings in the twelfth century. This instance is an excellent example of religious coexistence. The celebrated Sufi saint Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti settled in Ajmer in the twelfth century, and he attracted devotees from all creeds during his stay there. Pushkar, the lake near Ajmer, also beckoned pilgrims from ancient times. With increased activity in these centres, they emerged as small towns with mandapika and market streets over time.
