The Cholas' primary residence was Thanjavur also known as Tanjore. The Chola Empire was founded by Vijayalaya. Within the eighth century, he overthrew the Pallavas, seized control of the Tanjore kingdom, and paved the way for the foundation of the powerful Chola kingdom. Tanjore was thus designated as the principal capital of the illustrious Chola Empire. Tanjore is situated in Tamil Nadu's Cauvery Delta. Later, it took the name Thanjavur. It is a well-known location for South Indian architecture, art and religion.
