Detailed Solution

Count Camillo de Cavour was the Chief Minister of Sardinia-Piedmont State who led the movement to unify the regions of Italy.
He was a political leader and an Italian statesman who was born on August 1, 1810, in Turin and played an important role in Italian unification. Cavour, who led the movement to unite Italy's regions, was neither a revolutionary nor a democrat. He spoke French much better than Italian, as did many other wealthy and educated members of the Italian elite. Sardinia-Piedmont defeated Austrian forces in 1859 thanks to a deft diplomatic alliance with France engineered by Cavour. He also kept in touch with Garibaldi. In May 1860, during the reign of King Victor Emmanuel, whom Cavour had persuaded for support, a large number of armed volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the fray. In 1860, they marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, where they were successful in rallying local peasants to drive out the Spanish rulers. Victor Emmanuel II was declared king of a united Italy in 1861.
