Dietrich Brandis was the first Inspector General of Forests in India. The British urgently needed forests to build railways and ships. They were worried that the felling of trees by traders with abandon could destroy forests. Thus, they invited Dietrich Brandis, a German expert, to ask for advice and honoured him with the title of the first Inspector General of Forests in India. Brandis asserted that introducing a proper system was necessary, and the locals needed training in conservation science.
