Detailed Solution

Mangal Pandey was the first martyr of the Revolt of 1857. He was tried and put to death for assaulting his officers in Barrackpore. When the Hindu and Muslim sepoys learned that the lubricant in their enfield rifle cartridges was made from cow and pig fat, the uprising against the British was greatly aggravated. Both Hindu and Muslim religious precepts were contravened by the use of cow and pig grease in the weapons. The sepoys and locals engaged the British in marches in cities like Delhi, Kanpur, Meerut, and Lucknow as the uprising eventually spread there. The First War of Independence is the name given to this struggle.
