Chandragupta Maurya established the empire more than 2300 years ago. The empire contained several cities. These included Taxila, Ujjain, and Pataliputra. Ujjain was on the path from north to south India, while Taxila was a gateway to the northwest, including Central Asia. These cities likely had merchants, officials, and artisans residing there. There were farming and herding settlements in various regions. There were forests in some places, like central India, where people could harvest forest products and go hunting for food.
