Rani Lakshmibai joined the rebel sepoys in Jhansi and fought alongside Tatia Tope, Nana Saheb's general, against the British. Rani Avantibai Lodhi of Ramgarh raised and led an army of four thousand against the British who had taken over the governance of her realm in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. The British were vastly outnumbered by the insurgents. They were defeated in several fights. This convinced the locals that British rule was ended for real, giving them the courage to take the plunge and join the rebellion. A condition of broad public insurrection arose, particularly in the Awadh region.
