Detailed Solution

Prakrit was the language spoken by ordinary people in ancient times.
As opposed to Sanskrit, which means "complete, perfected," Prakrit implies "derived," reflecting the fact that the ordinary people employed it because it was historically seen as inferior to and less prestigious than Sanskrit. The earliest forms of Pali, the language of the Theravadin Buddhist canon, and Ashoka's inscriptions witness the use of the Middle Indo-Aryan language at its earliest stage. The most well-known variety of Prakrit is Ardhamgadh, which is connected to the Mauryan Empire that followed the ancient state of Magadha in present-day Bihar. The oldest Jain teachings were written at Ardhamagadhi, and Mahavira, the religion's founder, was born there.
