Kannauj was the main reason for conflict in the Tripartite struggle. The Gurjara-Pratiharas of Western India, the Palas of Eastern India, and the Rashtrakutas of the Deccan were engaged in a tripartite conflict from the seventh through the twelfth centuries. The region of Kannauj, located in a crucial location close to the Ganga Valley, is thought to have been the primary cause of this conflict. The Silk Road, one of the most significant commercial routes of the period and one that Harshavardhan presided over, passed through Kannauj. The Gurjara-Pratiharas eventually prevailed in the triangular conflict that lasted centuries to seize and expand their realms.
