The Tata Iron and Steel Company, TISCO, was India’s only iron and steel plant till Independence. In 1907, TISCO set up in Sakchi. The place was only a few kilometres away from the railway station and had ample raw materials. The coal mines of Jharia ensured enough supply of energy. Odisha and Chhattisgarh serve iron ore, limestone, manganese, and dolomite for this industry. The Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers provide water. Kolkata facilitates a large market for the products. Due to these facilities, the TISCO plant in Sakchi was set up here. Sakchi is now known as Jamshedpur.
